I just came across this entry in the Taiwanese MOE’s dictionary (教育部重編國語辭典修訂本):
彳亍
注音一式 ㄔˋ ㄔㄨˋ
漢語拼音 chìchù
彳,左步。亍,右步。彳亍指緩步慢行。文選˙潘岳˙射雉賦:「彳亍中輟,馥焉中鏑。」唐˙柳宗元˙答周君巢餌藥久壽書:「彳亍而無所趨,拳拘而不能肆。」
So, the character 行 (xíng — “go”) is made up of these two, meaning “left step” and “right step”, respectively. How about that.
