Hello
Today I learned about Toxoplasma gondii (could have done without that) and got my refund from the IRS (could definitely do with that). Alright then.
Never mind
Found it.
Can you not retrieve saved drafts from the mobile Tumblr or something? I’m not seeing where you would at the moment.

Shot in the Dark
If anybody out there works for the JET Program and comes across an application with clear tape on a transcript from Baton Rouge Community College, please note that it’s like that because they glued the envelope to it and by the time I realized it it was apparently too late to get more in time for the deadline.

Slowest News Day Ever of the Day: A man in North Texas claims he accidentally came across a racial slur in the classic Jim Henson kids show Fraggle Rock that has gone unnoticed for nearly three decades.
“I heard him say Jigaboo,” Keith White said, referring to a Fraggle Rock character named Wembley. The Hub, which aired the episode in question, told CW33 News Wembley is actually...

Dice?
sydvish:
Did you know that we have to call dice “number cubes” now because the word dice apparently promotes gambling? I got a stern look from our Instructional Specialist today because I said “dice” in front of the kids.
Crazy town!
What the hell is an “Instructional Specialist”?!

So… wtf? I still would rather use 稀 for that meaning. So sue me.

You learn something new every day, or something
I just came across this entry in the Taiwanese MOE’s dictionary
So, the character 行 (xíng — “go”) is made up of these two, meaning “left step” and “right step”, respectively. How about that.

According to Taiwan’s MOE’s 國語辭典:
「才」與「纔」當副詞時,義並無別,但說文解字:「才,艸木之初也。」因此「才」是本字,「纔」是通假,文獻則多用通假字。
It’s listed under the heading 才. So this use of 才 was around before 纔 came along. And I had thought that 纔 was the more “correct” character, since supposedly it’s used in traditional texts, although I did see that assumption get shot down a bit by a woman from Hong...

“囧”,本义为“光明”。从2008年开始在中文地区的网络社群间成为一种流行的表情符号,成为网络聊天、论坛、博客中使用最最频繁的字之一,它被赋予“郁闷、悲伤、无奈”之意。“囧”被形容为“21世纪最风行的一个汉字”。

A special thanks to whichever lovely lady at heylookatthisthing answered the burning question! I would have left this in the ask box, except it’s not enabled. FYI, it’s a female ichneumon wasp (although Lacey’s answer of “gross” is hard to argue with).

I bought a powerball ticket tonight, but honestly I got more excited when I realized it was the first day of hurricane season. I love the excitement, the unknown, being glued to the weather channel and listening to the bone chilling update music. This season is supposed to be a doosy, so I hope you stocked up on tax free supplies last weekend.

It's the Little Things
Although this week has pretty much been a big, steamy turd up until this point, I did get to experience a bit of Nirvana when I got on the on ramp at Sherwood Forest, and the 5-car group I was a part of merged flawlessly together (it’s a 2-lane ramp), got up to speed, and then merged perfectly with traffic. I was actually yelling out loud in the car, “yes! Yes, people! You’re all...
